We recently mentioned how air-and-hotel packages can help travelers—even those who don't normally book package deals—save money on trips to Europe this summer. The same strategy also works for trips to Australia. While flights are currently incredibly cheap because it's now low season, a package that includes a value-priced hotel makes a trip to the continent a fantastic bargain.
We dug into the details of a number of these packages, and the best savings we've found are with Virgin Vacations' Sydney and Melbourne trip, starting at $1,338 including taxes and fees for departures through July 31. The package includes airfare from Los Angeles, three nights at the Macleay Apartment Hotel in Sydney, a round-trip flight to Melbourne, three nights at The Victoria Hotel Melbourne, and the return flight to L.A. Booked separately, the components of the trip would total $1,936, netting a savings of about 20 percent.
If you'd still prefer to book your hotel and flight separately—perhaps because you want to cover your stay with loyalty points—don't forget to check Airfarewatchdog for the latest news on the lowest fares to Australia. Right now, August departures from Los Angeles to Sydney are as low as $665 round trip, including taxes.
