For 30 days you'll get a price break at Hawks Cay Resort on Duck Cay, midway down the Florida Keys

Sometimes a discounted hotel room deal isn't such a great deal. A price break may apply only to a small lot of rooms, making it difficult for travelers to secure the mark down. Or the reduction may come off the top of the rack rate, not the best available price, meaning that there are other ways—often unpublished rates that pop up on the hotel's own Web site if you play around with your travel dates--that potential guests can stay for less.

But here's a discount promo that will really save you money. It's from Preferred Hotels—a clutch of cosseting properties that Condé Nast Traveler readers love—the 30/30 Package trim rates by 30 percent (more or less).

The idea behind the 30/30 Package at several locations of Preferred Hotels & Resorts—a collection of 185 properties from Chicago to Chiang Mai—is simple: During a 30-day period, rooms are available at 30% off for stays through the end of the year.

Some of the locations are taking the 30% off the top of their published rack rate. But we were able to pinpoint a couple where the mark down comes off the even lower best available rate, so your price is even better. Below, the breakdown on two that we especially like.

Where: Hawks Cay Resort, in the Florida Keys. The 300-plus-room complex ranked on Condé Nast Traveler's Gold List of the world's best places to stay in 2000, when readers called it a "great family resort" that's "as laid-back as Hemingway's Florida" with a "saltwater lagoon that's nice to swim in."

The Savings: The 30/30 Package here requires a four-night minimum, and puts a Water View King Room at $168 a night, or $670 for a four-night stay. That's 27% off the best available rate of $231 a night, or $923 for a four-night stay. (All prices are after fees and taxes.)

Where: Rancho Bernardo Inn, a recently renovated 280-some-room golf and spa resort in San Diego. Condé Nast Traveler readers are particularly fond of the sprawling spa, voting it top resort spa in 2008 Spa Poll.

The Savings: Here the "30/30 Package" has no minimum stay, and Deluxe Resort King or Double Queen rooms are available at $169 a night, or 28% off the best available rate of $235 a night. (Prices are after fees and taxes.)
